Sovana

City Etruscan, Roman, medieval, Aldobrandeschi birthplace and home of Gregory VII, is wrapped in the rich vegetation typical of this area and defended by a boundary wall on which the fortress dominates Aldobrandesca.

In the wonderful square stand Palazzetto major monuments such as the archive, the Praetorian Palace, the Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, the Loggia del Capitano, the small, attractive church of Santa Maria with tabernacle of the ninth century, the ruins of Mamiliano, holy dragoctono that the tradition wants sovanese crashed into a barrel of nails.
At the edge of town is the impressive Romanesque cathedral.
